President Jorge Ubico established the modern company where all Guatemalan stamps are now printed as a direct dependency of the Treasury Ministry under the supervision of the Tipografia Nacional. Guatemala was one of the first ‘smaller’ countries to have this stamp printing capacity.

The plant is now located in a modern plant producing postage and revenue stamps by various processes including engraving. It is an agency of the Ministry of Finance and produces official legal paper (papel sellado) and revenue stamps.

The 7 January 1894 saw the founding of the National Printing Office on the instruction of the then President of the country, General Jose Maria Reyna and it is a dependency of the Ministry of Government. Unfortunately, in the 1917/18 earthquakes the original print works was destroyed and needed relocation. The present building was constructed and occupied in 1922 and has been enlarged and modernised over the years.

In 1930, President Lazaro Chacon ordered the Tipografia Nacional to print stamps for the country, establishing the modern era in Guatemalan philately.
