  First postage stamp issued: 1847

Twenty years ago, stamp manufacturing in the United States was exclusively a government function. In the early 1970s, the government leased several private presses which were used by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) to print stamps for the Postal Service. However, these were not separate commercial contracts for private-sector printing of US postage stamps. In 1978, USPS had the vision to bring a modern entrepreneurial spirit to the endeavor and issued a Request for Proposal for the commercial printing and finishing of US postage stamps. Since this first contract award, several comapnies have been extensively connected with the implementation of USPS' alternative-source stamp manufacturing program. Over the years, USPS' vision has resulted in the reliable and cost-effective delivery of innovative and high-quality products
